Santa Teresa di Gallura
its origins go back
to the Romans, who due to the deep inlet of its harbour, called it "Longonis",
afterwards under Pisa rules it took the name of Longosardo and only in the XIX
century the Savoia gave it its always actual name.
The small centre of
the town is very clean and tidy with its long and straight road leading to the
main square.
Near
by on the cliff the old tower of Longosardo which overlooks the harbour, the bocche
of Bonifacio and the house beach Rena Bianca is worth a visit.
As
all over the Gallura, also in this location there are numerous, wonderful beaches.
An absolute must is a visit to "Capo Testa" with its beautiful lighthouse and
his granite reefs modelled by nature to incredible forms.
Furthermore the
granite caves of Roman epoch and the famous "Valle della Luna" (moon valley) are
worth a visit.

Porto Puddu
is in Gallura, 7 km from Palau direction S. Teresa di Gallura.
The location
is well-known as a paradise for windsurfers above all in spring and late summer
because of its ideal wind conditions.
In summer, during the high season period
the place is crowded by families and people from all over the world.
The
two main beaches of Porto Pollo are characterized with high dunes of finest sand.
One of these beaches, called Sciumara, is of particular natural and environmental
interest due to the delta of the river Liscia, which through reed thickets and
luxuriant vegetation flows lazily into the sea. The place is ideal for bird watching
and is worth to be explored, perhaps by canoe.
Gallura
is the name of the north east territory of Sardinia. It includes
the coast towns of Olbia, Arzachena, Palau, S. Teresa di Gallura and the inland
ones like Tempio Pausania, Calangianus and S. Antonio.
The indented coast
offers fantastic panoramas, wonderful beaches, dreamy little bays, granite rocks
modelled by nature and numerous little islands surrounded by a sea of unforgettable
colours and transparencies.
This geographical area includes the famous Costa
Smeralda (territory of Arzachena) and the marvellous National Park of the archipelago
of La Maddalena.
The
climate is mild and winter is never very strong.
In summer, thanks to the
marine breezes, it is never too sultry and it rarely rains.
Practically the
summer season begins in May and lasts to the end of September, but very often
also in April and October there are pleasantly warm periods.
The month of
April is particularly beautiful when, on the island, the nature generously spreads
all over its colourful blossoms and inebriant perfumes.
La Maddalena e Caprera
The arcipelago of
La Maddalena is formed of 4 main islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, S. Stefano and
Spargi), other three minor islands (Budelli. S. Maria, Razzoli) and different
very small islands. The biggest island is the only one with a little town:
"La Maddalena".
The town is situated on the southern part of the island, opposite the Sardinian
coast and climbs up the granite hill "Guardia Vecchia".
La Maddalena is reachable
by ferry boat, leaving all few minutes from Palau.
The atmosphere of the little
town is really very particular due to the ancient part with its buildings from
late 1600 and the glances one can take on nice little lanes, stairs and picturesque
squares. It is very pleasant and relaxing to walk along the moles of Gala Gavetta
between the little shops, bars, cafés and ice cream parlours.
The central part of the island is very rocky and covered by macchia, but the main attractions are the wonderful beaches which appear all of a sudden between the cliffs washed out by a crystal clear sea sparkling in thousand nuances of blue and green.
A panoramic
tour of the island is highly recommended.
On the main road which follows the
whole coast one can look at the forts of Punta Tegge and Nido d'Aquila with their
little fishermen ports and take a swim at Cala Francese, reach the marvellous
panoramic sights of the forts of Punta dei Colmi and Guardia Vecchia and, with
short detours arrive to the beaches of Cala Majore, Bassa Trinitŕ, Monti di Rena
and Giardinella or the little bays of Spalmatore, Cala Lunga, Abbatoggia and Stagno
Torto.
"Caprera"
is the second isle of the archipelago and connected to La Maddalena by the
bridge Passo della Moneta.
On Caprera, Giuseppe Garibaldi (Italian national
hero) has acquired in 1855 his beloved shelter and lived there his last 26 years.
The house has now been transformed into a museum exposing furniture, tools, weapons,
documents and all sorts of relics.
The tomb of the hero of the two worlds
is only a few steps of the house, in midst of the vegetation.
The only asphalt road of the island leads to the museum, but a lot of dirt roads lead to the best panoramic outlooks, the nicest beaches and the most enchanted little coves as well as to some abandoned military forts.
